James Benton, Jr., 63, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014 after a sudden illness. He was born in Port Arthur, Texas on March 10, 1951 to the late James and Mattie Benton. James was a 1969 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School and was an employee of Entergy for 38 years. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for two years before being honorably discharged.

James was a beloved family man that was a church steward and male chorus president. His favorite pastime was watching western TV shows and spending playful moments with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Mary  Cookie Franklin.

Loving memories will remain with his lovely wife of 44 years, Orgle  Faye Benton; his three children, Jamarie Benton-Jarmon (Phillip), Faylon Benton, and Nicholas Benton; two grandchildren, Kamryn Linden and Jacquelyn Jarmon; his nieces, Marlene Captain Petry (Roosevelt), Darlene Captain Wade (Cedric), nephew Jimmie L. Captain, Jr., special friends Willie Taylor, Reggie Trainer, James Moore, Freddie Antoine, Lionel Green, Martin Sigur and Eric James along with a host of relatives and friends.

A celebration service will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 2 p.m. with visitation from 12 noon until service time at Carte Chapel CME Church at 549 West 8th Street, Port Arthur, Texas with Rev. Rodney Wooten officiating. Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.

Funeral Services: Saturday May 31, 2014, 2 PM at Carter Chapel CME Church

The viewing will be from 12 noon until service time. Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery.
