Richard Eugene Smith, age 82, of Bryan, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 19, 2013. A time for the family to receive friends will be Monday, January 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, at Hillier Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Gary Rowe officiating. A reception will immediately follow the funeral service with a private family interment following the reception.

Richard was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Eugene Arthur and Aletha Mae (Berriman) Smith on October 23, 1930. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University class of '54 and married Patsy Pate on October 1, 1954. He worked for Gulf States Utilities Company in Beaumont for 34 years before retiring in 1990 and moved back to Bryan to be closer to his wife's family in 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy; a daughter, Sharon and husband Joel Allen of North Richland Hills; a son, Charles Smith of Walnut Creek, Ca.; three grandchildren, Stephen Hayes of Houston, Chandra and husband Douglas McFarlen of Abilene, and David Hayes of Missouri City; great-grandson, Lucs James McFarlen of Abilene; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Jane Pate of Bryan.

The family would like to thank special caregiver and friend Tonya Elliott Ybarra.

Also, thanks to the staff at Hospice Brazos Valley especially Emily, Lily and Sam and others who have made life more comfortable Wendy, Lisa, Jessica, Essie and Kristen.
