Gilbert Wayne Hiter peacefully passed away July 11, 2024 at Heartis Mid-Cities in Bedford, Texas surrounded by his family. Wayne was born on January 14, 1933 in El Dorado, Arkansas to Rose Green Hiter and Otis Hiter and spent his early years there before moving back to Dry Creek, Louisiana.

He graduated from Oakdale High School and was the class valedictorian. Wayne was a long-time resident of Baton Rouge where he worked for Gulf States Utilities (now Entergy) and was an active member of University Baptist Church prior to moving to Texas. He was graduated from LSU-Lafayette where he received several academic honors in the College of Engineering. He also served in the United States Air Force and later in the Air Force Reserves as a pilot, retiring with the rank of Major. Wayne was a past president of the Baton Rouge Sertoma Club and served his community as a Louisiana Master Gardener working with the Burton Rural Life Museum and gardens.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-nine years, Joanne Tyson Hiter.

He is survived by his three daughters, Betsy Hiter Wells of Navarre, Florida, Kerry Hiter Avery of Grapevine, Texas, and Candy Hiter Arbour of Beaver Creek, Colorado.

He will be greatly missed by his entire family including his six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Heartis Mid Cities on August 17th in Bedford, Texas.
