Donald Wall Smith, 83, of the Fairmount area of Hemphill, TX died at home Monday, February 28, 2011. A resident of Groves, TX for 37 years, he was born in Port Arthur, Texas on November 2, 1927, the son of William and Lucy Wall Smith. He retired after 38 years from Gulf States Utilities in Port Arthur, TX. He was a member of the Groves church of Christ and an elder there for 24 years. After moving to Fairmount, TX he became an active member of the church in Hemphill, TX for 20 years. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Castella Fontenot Smith, daughter Deborah Smith Cook and her husband Dwight of Odessa, TX; sons Gary Smith and his wife Marie of Fairmount, TX and Jeffrey Smith and his wife Roberta of San Augustine, TX; daughter Rebecca Smith Gilbert and her husband David of Mandeville, LA; adopted son and daughter Mark and Nancy Brown of Crockett, TX; one brother, Roland Smith of Groves, TX and one sister Hope Smith Martin of West Monroe, LA. He was also known as grandpa, papa, pawpaw and poppie to eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mr. Smith is preceded in death by one child, Donna Rae Smith and several brothers and sisters. Visitation will take place Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, TX from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. His funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 3, at the Hemphill church of Christ with burial to follow at Oak Bluff Cemetery in Port Neches, TX at 3:00 p.m. Contributions to Gospel Broadcasting Network would be appreciated by the family.
