Charles Newton Schlatre Sr. passed away peacefully at home in Port Allen on Sunday, April 3, 2011. He was 83, born to Norman Richard Schlatre Sr. and Mary Maude Bourgoyne Schlatre on Feb. 22, 1928, in Plaquemine.

He graduated from St. John High School, Plaquemine, in 1945 and began his career as a lineman's helper with Gulf States Utilities, Baton Rouge. He retired in 1986 as a line crew supervisor for Gulf States, Port Allen, with 41 1/2 years of loyal and dedicated service. He was known to his siblings and co-workers as "Johnny" or "Charlie." He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Port Allen. Visitation at Wilbert's Funeral Home, Port Allen, on Wednesday, April 6, from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., followed by a Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church, Port Allen, at 11 a.m. A Christian burial will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge.

Preceded in death by his first wife of 34 years, Elaine Therese Caffarel Schlatre, and infant son; second wife of 28 years, Agnes Mae Berthier Schlatre; parents, Norman Richard Schlatre Sr. and Mary Maude Bourgoyne Schlatre; brother, Norman R. Schlatre Jr.; and sister, Rosemary Schlatre Rhorer. He is survived by five children and their spouses, Dr. Karen Schlatre Hunt and Dr. Melvin Hunt, Watkinsville, Ga.; Charles N. Schlatre Jr. and Dianne Galloway Schlatre, Port Allen; Judith Schlatre Dees and Lester E. Dees, and Kathryn Schlatre Bergeron, all of Baton Rouge; and Gary Joseph Schlatre, Port Allen. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Chad Loup and Dr. Michelle Carley Loup, Ashley Loup Godfrey and Frank Godfrey, Amanda Erin Schlatre, Lindsey Schlatre Norsworthy and Nathan Norsworthy, Patrick Christian Englade and Tina Horner Englade, Dylan Michael Bergeron, Kristin Bergeron Dykes and J'Mikel Dykes, Kayla Alicia Schlatre and Jennifer Elaine Schlatre; and 11 great-grandchildren, Carley, Chloe and Ellie Loup, Chandler, Hunter, Anna Grant and Emma Godfrey, Ella Gleichman, Christopher and Haley Englade and MykelAnn Dykes. Surviving siblings and their spouses include Kathleen Schlatre Berthelot, Denham Springs; Maxine Schlatre Berthelot, and Estelle Schlatre Pitre, both of Plaquemine; John Alden and Charlene Schlatre, Baton Rouge; Larry and Jeanette Schlatre, Plaquemine; James Malcolm Schlatre, Baker; and Earl Fritz Schlatre, Sorrento; sister-in-law, Helen Watts Schlatre, Baker; and number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his second wife's brother, Dr. Robert Berthier, his wife, Terri, and their son, Neil; six children and their spouses, Roger Skip Chustz and NiNi Nguyen, Elizabeth and Marshall Gosserand, Melanie Chustz Perkins, James Bert and Chris Chustz, Lauré Chustz Flatt, and Stephen and Cindy Chustz; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Chadd and Cheryl Chustz, Sarah and Adam Millman, James and Lindsey Chustz, Anna Mechling and Brian Wolf, Austin Perkins, Becky, Thomas, Allison, Stephanie and Nicole Chustz; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Chad Loup, Chris Englade, Dylan Bergeron, Christopher Englade, Stephen Chustz and Austin Perkins. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Schlatre and David Rabalais. We want to thank our dear brother, Gary, for his devoted and compassionate care of our father throughout his illness. We want to express our sincere appreciation to Frances Cobb, our dad's caregiver who kept him going through the loss of his wife Agnes and his battle with heart disease. We would also like to thank Hospice of Baton Rouge and Pauline Engolio for the care and assistance they gave us during his illness. Special thanks to Dr. Joseph Duemite and Dr. Phil Padgett and staff for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Hospice of Baton Rouge.
