Kerwin Sutphen, 76, died Saturday, August 1, 2015 in an Irving hospital. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 6th at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene with Chaplain Marianne Nassef officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Kerwin was born September 18, 1938 in Beaumont, Texas to Trudie Mae (Queen) and Harry Aaron Sutphen. He graduated from Vidor High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957 where he was an airplane mechanic. He then graduated from SMU with a bachelor s degree as an industrial engineer. Kerwin worked at TI in Dallas and Houston for ten years then for Gulf States Utilities at Beaumont twenty years. He lived in the Philippines off and on for thirteen years before moving to Odessa in May. He loved boating, sailing and fishing. Survivors include two daughters, Karen Sutphen of Odessa, Kathy Petty and husband Mickey of Farmersville; son, Ashton Sutphen of Houston; adopted daughters, Jodi Hill of Lumberton and Jeannie Hill of Houston; brother, Wallace Crossley and wife Gwen of Zavalla; five grandchildren, Brandon Phillips, Amber Snell, Maci Wyatt, Heather Petty and Shannon Mendoza; eight great grandchildren; and two nieces and one nephew.
