Sammie Preston Raney, Jr was born on October 15, 1947, and finished his race on Earth on Thursday, July 18, 2024, after a short but difficult battle with ALS. Sam is survived by one daughter Sheryl Schafer (Mark), one son Neill Raney (Kelly), eight grandchildren, Amanda, Morgan, Nathan, Adam, Brianna, Preston, Pierson, and Paxton, and great grandchildren Lukas, Levi, Hudson, Braxton and Mackenzie. Sam is also survived by one brother Jerry Raney (Jan) and one sister Bea Ingram (Herschel). Sam was a proud USAF Veteran who proudly served in Vietnam and boldly loved his country. Sam retired from Gulf States/Entergy after 31 years and made lifelong friends through his position there. Sam was a member of Greenwell Springs Baptist Church for 40 years where he was a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher for 38 years. This disease caused him to ultimately give up teaching his class which was a heartbreaking decision. He loved his Sunday School class dearly. Most people who knew Sam knew he had a great passion for LSU baseball. He was on Coach's Committee and went to Omaha many times. Sam had season tickets for over 30 years and almost never missed the chance to cheer on his Tigers. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, the first thing on his list was that he loved the Lord, and he truly did. We are blessed to know that he led many people to Jesus in his life. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 49 years, Karen, who he was so looking forward to seeing again. Friends and relatives are welcome to attend the visitation at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church on Monday, July 22, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A Special thank you to St Joseph Hospice for their care and attention to our father and our family during this very difficult time. Arrangements have been entrusted to McLin Funeral Home.
