Lewis Guthrie
Lewis Cass Guthrie, Jr. born September 2, 1927 to Alma Elizabeth Henrietta Miller and Lewis Cass Guthrie, Sr. in Taylor, Texas passed away February 29, 2000. Lewis was married July 29, 1949 to Jacqueline Carswell, also of Taylor. Lewis and Jackie were married fifty years and made their home in the Gulf States Utilities communities of Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and finally, for the past thirty-one years on Lazy Lane in Beaumont. Lewis is survived by his children, Cindy and her husband Tom Simpson, Jackie and her husband Randy Rice, Lewis Cass III and his wife Trudy, and Cassandra and her husband Bill Hold. “Paw Paw” is survived by seven grandchildren, Jessica Marie Flocke, Thomas Allan Glatt, Jr., Angela Hope Guthrie, Stephanie Cynthia Glatt, William Cass Rice, Andrew Mark Stevenson, and Alyson Guthrie Falk, and great grandchild Lina Samantha Rice.

Lewis had a very full life, having attended John Tarleton College at Stephenville from May, 1944 to January, 1946. Fondest memories of his Tarleton years included his title of Student Director and Sergeant of Band, Yearbook Sports Editor for baseball, Commander of Cadet Corps and Who’s Who in Honor Points. His special memory of Tarleton as he shared with his family, was his time in Professor Sweeney’s class. There he learned math from an interested educator who took the time and energy to help him move toward obtaining his engineering degree. Military service in the United States Army Air Force from September, 1946 to August, 1947 took Lewis to Guam where he served as Teletype Technician.

A proud Longhorn, Lewis was graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in January 1950 following his military service. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Lewis joined GSU in February 1950 and proudly served for forty-two years until October 1, 1992. His family recalls his beginning years of climbing light poles and Lewis’ service at all hours to his company and neighbors as weather demanded. He retired as General Manager of Engineering. Lewis never lost his memory of those who educated him, those he educated, and his many life experiences. He was quite a boss to us all!

Dad served his family and neighbors with great care, never counting the number of moves each made or how many times he was called upon. He offered guidance and support to each of us. Lewis was a private man with a strong patriotic spirit and belief in doing what is right. Lewis and Jackie enjoyed their time at the Pompano Club dancing when ever they had the opportunity, they loved baseball all of their lives and were avid followers of the Texas Longhorns.

The family of Lewis and Jackie wish to thank the many who have provided care and support to their parents and to them upon their returns to Beaumont. A special thank you from our hearts to Dr. Michael Findley, Dr. Christopher Trauth, Dr. Robert Birdwell, and their staffs, to the staff of St. Elizabeth Hospital, to Morris Healthcare, Minnie Tiller, Margie Barrera and staff. To our many neighbors, friends, our family of GSU friends and those we may have failed to mention, we will be forever grateful.
